Chapter 12

Claire woke up in her bed alone, her hand resting on the pillow beside her. Sitting atop of it lay a single red rose. Claire smiled. Butch wasn’t the man she’d thought him to be. He was caring and considerate and an animal in bed. She rolled toward her alarm clock. The bright red numbers read seven o’clock. She wasn’t sure if it was the evening or the morning, although as rested as she felt, she was sure it was the latter.

Claire raised her hand above her head and stretched. Her muscles ached but in a good way. She’d do it all over again if she could. Claire pushed herself into a sitting position and pulled the sheet up with her when she went. After their aerobics last night, the last thing she should have been was modest, but in the light of a new day, her old reservations came flooding back to the forefront.

Claire glanced around her room. There were no signs of Butch or his clothes. Her bathroom door stood open with the light turned off. She didn’t know where he’d gone. She shrugged, pulled the sheet from the bed, and wrapped it around her when she stood. She walked to the closet, dropped the sheet, and donned her favorite pink silk robe. It wasn’t see-through, but it was sheer enough to make her feel sexy.

She needed to find him and make sure things weren’t awkward between them. He’d made himself clear last night on where he stood with his feelings, but she hadn’t, and she wanted to change that. She needed to change that.

Claire padded out into the hallway toward Butch’s room. His door was open, and the light was off, so she turned around and headed toward the stairs. She was going to make herself a cup of coffee and then get in the shower to soothe the soreness out of her muscles if she couldn’t find him. She ran her hand through her curls before she pushed into her kitchen and came to an abrupt halt.

Butch was sitting at her kitchen table with not only Mike and Jake, but with Special Agent Thompson, whom she had met a few days before. Claire could feel the heat travel up into her cheeks. She didn’t move, and she didn’t say anything. She just glanced back and forth between eyes that were glued on her.

Butch pushed from his chair and walked toward her. Stopping in front of her, he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her in close. He leaned down and kissed her, a deep soul-searing kiss. He lifted his head and smiled at her. “Good morning, angel. Why don’t you run upstairs and take a shower while I fix you some coffee and make you some breakfast?”

Claire nodded, unsure what to say because of the men in the kitchen witnessing his display. He’d made himself clear where he stood and staked his claim so to speak. She didn’t envy him after she left. She knew her brother all too well.
